Put a Filter On It

I first wrote Put a Filter On It: Instagram as Photojournalism in college after being inspired by David Guttenfelder’s intimate photographs of North Korea on his Instagram. The piece explores the ethics behind publishing photographs taken in conflict areas…with filters.

I interviewed Koci Hernandez, an assistant professor for New Media at University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism; Charles Apple, the focus page editor of the Orange County Register; and Kate Knibbs, a contributing writer for Digital Trends.

The article now lives on Vantage, a Medium publication that focuses on photography, and has been assigned as reading for Kent University students.
